Healthy lunch box options
Updated | By Staff Writer

Bored and uninspired about what to pack in lunch boxes? Apart from the good old faithful healthy sarmies, here are 12 fun suggestions from six health-conscious working Durban moms…
1. Fruit Box – chop up a selection of seasonal fruit & veggies into bite size chunks (easy to eat on the run and more exciting than an apple!)
2. Healthy Crunchie Fingers (Brookdale Spa new Recipe Book has a great Recipe – see page 141)
3. Biltong (sliced or sticks! It always works well and good protein)
4. Yoghurt or alternate with Woolies Smoothies to shake it up a bit!
5. Whole wheat muffins (make a batch of 24 mini size muffins and freeze – soooo very convenient to take out the freezer in the morning as you need!) – Add same quantity Apple Puree instead of oil for a much healthier option!
6. Whole wheat wraps filled with leftover roast chicken/grated cheese/cucumber or carrot ribbons
7. Fun for kiddies – cut cheese into shapes and send packing with savoury biscuits
8. Boiled egg with whole wheat bread Marmite fingers, cheese & grapes
9. Tub of hummus, whole wheat mini pita’s and bags baby carrots, cherry tomatoes and cucumber sticks
10. Sweetcorn on the cob
11. Dried fruit - almonds mixed with raisins/cranberries or mixed nuts (Minoli’s has a great selection)
12. Popcorn (is always a winner especially the air popped version to kick off a healthy start to the week) Can get the lite microwave option too which is sooooo convenient!
The six busy contributing moms are Karen Brokensha (Matatu Hospitality Marketing Consultant), Emma Dunk (Owner of Embetween Communications), Cindy Norcott (Owner of Pro Appointments/Founder of Robinhood), Alice Leah (Editor of Mum’s Mail), Lucy Markewicz (Owns Lucy’s Cake Shop/Manages Freedom Cafe) and Marcelle Roberts (Owner of Cafe 1999/Unity).
