Christmas with the Gumbis
Updated | By ZAlebs/Tamlyn Canham
By the time you read this, Trevor Gumbi and his family will
be relaxing on a beach somewhere in the Philippines.
Mzansi’s funniest family left for their yearly festive season vacation on Friday, and we are so jelly!
During their three-week holiday, Trevor, his wife Lucille, and their two sons, will make stops in the Philippines, Dubai, Bali and Thailand!
But carting the entire family across the world can get a bit crazy.
"Travelling with the whole family is chaotic. I am a very organised person, and none of these people are organised - at all," Trevor told ZAlebs.Lucille disagrees, and is adamant that she is never late, while son Jodie adds: “When you (Trevor) need to go to work in the morning, you're just too lazy, and just carry on sleeping. The last time you said give me 10 minutes, and you were already late.”
Mmm, Trevor it looks like you have been busted!
The Gumbi family is not big on Christmas tree decorating, but they do have some festive traditions of their own.
Lucille says the entire families wear onesies while they are travelling, and everyone wears white on New Year’s Eve.
Jodie and Jamie also set up “Christmas beds” using hotel coaches on Christmas Eve, and fall asleep in front of the TV.
Shopping in Dubai and swimming with the dolphins and just some of the things the family is looking forward to on their trip.
Aside from being able to travel the world, Trevor says compared to back in the day, Christmas is pretty much the same.
“Nothing much has changed, except affordability. It is the same, because I was raised in a family with a lot of love…and there is a lot of love here. The good feelings are still here.”
So what’s the best gift Trevor’s son’s Jamie and Jodie have received?
Jamie: "The best was our iPads.”
Jodie: “The worst gift is not getting us a gift.”
Lucille: “Like this year, we are not getting you guys anything.”
Mmm, mom sounded a bit serious about that one. Sorry, guys!
Trevor says he hopes their children learn that Christmas is not only about receiving gifts.
“It is also about sharing with the less fortunate, and celebrating something that is bigger than yourself.”
Watch part II of our “Christmas with the Gumbis” special below to find out who is usually the big spender when the family goes on holiday, and how they will be giving back to those less fortunate this holiday.
