Five top tips for busy mums from the experts at the Spa

The harsh effects of winter can sorely be felt by you and more so your skin during the cold winter months. Struggling to get out of bed in the mornings, cold chilly feet, dry and dull looking skin, craving those hot coffees to pick you up are all due to the lower temperatures in winter. The lowered humidity also means your skin needs special care during winter.

Good to do during winter

1. Full Body Exfoliations one to two times per month: ideal to slough off that dry skin and give you an amazing glow. A good tip is to use an oil based body scrub. In a Spa treatment this would start off with a 20 minute full body exfoliation, aromatherapy conditioning body wash as you shower, and finish off with a hydrating moisturiser. This would take between 30 -45 minutes and is available at The Spa on Fairway. At home, you can blend brown sugar and a rich carrier/vegetable oil, like olive oil, wheat germ oil or evening primrose oil. To make it a bit more indulgent add a few drops of your favourite essential oils. Leave this in the shower and do a quick full body scrub and rinse off lightly, leaving your skin lightly moisturised. This should take 10 minutes.

2. Heavier moisturiser: due to the drop in humidity (amount of water in the air) skin is left feeling tight, dry and dehydrated easily in winter. To avoid the dulling effects of winter on your skin, it’s better to use a heavier moisturiser during winter. Move away from your oil free moisturiser and opt for something that will give a little more hydration.

3. Toner: often a step missed by a lot of women as it doesn’t seem important, toing is an essential step in skincare and adds moisture content on skin, removes traces of cleanser that may still be left on the skin, and reduces the amount of moisturiser needed by the skin. Make sure your toner is alcohol free. TIP: for convenience, empty toners into a spray bottle so you’re not fiddling with cotton pads and are just spraying directly onto the skin. Great for winter is Dermalogica’s Antioxidant Hydramist.

4. Water intake: make sure you are having enough water. Hot water with lemon is a healthy alternative to coffee.  Winter makes you crave those rich coffees but beware of your caffeine intake and remember it takes four glasses of water to neutralise the ill effects of coffee on your system. This applies even if it’s decaffeinated.

5. Hair also takes a beating during winter: it is excellent to do a hot oil treatment in winter, heat up a vegetable/carrier oil, like olive oil, wheat germ oil or evening primrose oil, to make it a bit more indulgent add a few drops of your favourite essential oils, massage into hair for five minutes, and leave in for 30 minutes, or overnight, and wash off for healthy silky hair.
