Want to lead a healthier and more fulfilled life? Here’s KZN wellness and fitness expert, Lisa Raleigh, with her top 5 tips for the week…

.)    When you get to the most difficult part of a strength exercise – stop. Holding that tricky position for just a second will make you get the most out of the move.

.)    If you want to get the most out of your strength exercises, keep your eyes closed. It may seem extreme, but performing a move blindly forces your brain and muscles to communicate better. You’ll be more coordinated as a result.

.)    You may have mastered the art of popping pills without water, but you could be jeopardising their effect. All medicine is dissolved in water when tested, so you’ll get more predictable results than dry swallowing. Washing pills down with alcohol, milk, fizzy drinks and fruit juices is not a good idea either.

.)    Don’t use medication past its expiry date. Those dates are there for a reason, as the active ingredients in certain meds can break down into harmful elements. This is especially important in chronic conditions, so don’t take a chance.

.)    Skip the time-consuming workouts. During long, steady sessions your body adapts to be more energy efficient. Short, high-intensity interval training will burn more kilojoules and keep your metabolism revving for hours. The time-saving shorter session is an added bonus.
