What's on in Durban this weekend
Updated | By Staff Writer
THURSDAY 30 OCTOBER
KA-BLAM @ Open Plan Studio
Open Plan is exhibiting a group show by 20 of South Africa’s top comic book creators.
KA-BLAM! Will launch a range of brand new comic books and art.
Durban's own Luke Mover’s cyberpunked neo-noir Remember Emma and Deon De Lange's sci-fi space-opera Tomica will be on sale along with other graphic novels from South Africa's best talent.
It's free to get in to the exhibition and it runs through the weekend so why not support some local art?
(Official opening is at 6pm on Thursday)
FRIDAY 31 OCTOBER
Arno Els @ The Factory Cafe
After years of grinding it out on the club circuit, Arno Els is finally doing his first one-man show, The Naked Truth. You can expect material on “how to survive being Afrikaans", "how to kick addiction or avoid relationships", and "how to find a silver lining when you think you might be adopted". But most importantly: "holding on to a sense of humour because life’s too short". The show comes with a meal and a bottle of wine so it’s a full package deal!
P.H.fat @ Crowded House, Pietermaritzburg
If you missed them in Durban in July, then here's your chance to see the awesome P.H.fat in action in Pietermaritzburg. It's a Halloween party, so don't forget to dress up. Organisers promise you'll get in free if you do... plus there will be 'scary drinks' the whole night. Doors open at 8pm.
Here's a taster of what you can expect:
SATURDAY 1 NOVEMBER
Umhlanga Food and Wine Festival
Gangs of Ballet, Majozi and the Kickstands will be at the Umhlanga Food and Wine Festival. We're talking craft beer, good wines and artisan food stalls under the stars. The market runs from 12 in the afternoon to about 8pm. Tickets are available in advance via Computicket for R100 or its R120 at the gate.
Day of The Dead @ Taco Zulu
No one does Halloween quite like Taco Zulu. Every year the Taco crew goes the extra mile to put on a scarily cool event and this year is no different. The zombie apocalypse kicks off at 3pm but rest assured peeps will be howling to the moon well into the evening. It’s also imperative to put your best dress-up foot forward as everyone goes all out so no half hearted tries please. For more information check out their Facebook page here.
SUNDAY 2 NOVEMBER
UpMarket, Umhlanga Ridge
Get into the Sunday groove with some market vibes and live jazz at this month's UpMarket in Umhlanga. With Durban creatives from near and far it’s a perfect way to support local trade and spend your Sunday. Doors open at 9am, close at 2pm and entry is free.
