From local legend Guy Buttery to a Swazi music festival and a mass Durban bike ride, it's going to be a packed weekend. Take a look at our pick of what's on.
Guy Buttery and Alhousseini Anivolla: Alliance Francaise, Durban
Word from Jo'burg fans is this is one not to be missed! Local guitar maestro Guy Buttery and Alhousseini Anivolla, the Niger-born lead guitarist and vocalist of the world renowned nomad blues band Etran Finatawa, are in Durban tonight for the KZN leg of their Southern Africa tour. They're playing at the Alliance Francaise at 22 Sutton Crescent, Morningside.
Tickets are R90 for non-members, members pay R70. Get there at 7pm.
Bushfire Festival: Swaziland
Starting tonight and running until Sunday is Swaziland’s MTN Bushfire Festival. The weekend line-up includes Toya Delazy, Euphonic, Jeremy Loops, Black Motion, Bomba Estereo (from Colombia) and Guy Buttery and Alhousseini Anivolla. It’s pitched as a music and arts festival that celebrates creative expression, but that’s not all: 100% of profits go to Aids orphans through the Swazi NGO Young Heroes, while merchandise proceeds go to the non-profit rural community development project - Gone Rural BoMake. It’s well worth crossing the border for. Get all the details here.
Critical Mass: Durban
Critical Mass is a bicycle ride that takes place on the last Friday of every month in over 300 cities worldwide. It’s a very slow and casual ride and is described as “part protest and part celebration”. It aims to highlight the awesomeness of getting around on two wheels, create awareness of bikes as an alternative and sustainable form of transport, build community and celebrate the love of bikes. It’s open to all bicycle types and riders. Riders will leave from Moses Mabhida at 6pm, but best get there at 5.30pm. Take a look at the route map here. Along the route, Corner Cafe in Glenwood will be hosting a hot dogs special for riders, as well as live music.
