Stylish hotspots in Durban
Updated | By Staff Writer
Living on the east coast comes with an obvious set of perks that no Durbanite should ever take for granted…
Remind yourself how special the 031 is, and pretend you’re on a vacation every weekend. Here are 4 stylish hotspots to get you started… I might just even see you there.
Circus Circus
The beachfront has had a bit of a sordid past but has fought back with re-development and classic charm. The promenade, once a tricky obstacle course of the unsavory is now a hot spot of families, runners, strollers, power walkers and cyclists. The hub of these positive vibes has to be Circus Circus, located in a new building development at the old Snake Park.
Skater boys do their thang at the skate park next door; it’s littered with gorgeous graffiti art by young Durban artists. Admire their skill as you stroll by and head to lounge on one of the Circus Circus pastel deckchairs. Order ‘The Works’ (chicken, mozzarella and cherry tomatoes drizzled in basil pesto, served with fresh rocket) on Lebanese flat beard or the ‘Eggs Benedict’ if you’re there for brekkie. They do a mean Strawberry Daiquiri if you’re still there post lunch. The atmosphere is laid back and you’ll fit right in wearing your swimsuit and sarong.
Taco Zulu
Admittedly for the young and chic Durbanites amongst us, it’s still one of the most popular Florida Road hangouts. Their (fairly) new sushi bar upstairs is a hidden away from the madness below and is a perfect quick spot for a business lunch. Impress new clients with the seriously authentic sushi while the youngsters are still earning their degrees slaving away at lectures.
The mood is much more sophisticated during the week. A pair of stylish sunnies is a must, pair it with a designer handbag and you’ll look like a local. If you have lecture goers still lounging around your household be sure to send them directly to Taco Zulu between 3-6pm for various student driven specials, like beer and burrito combo on Monday evenings.
Breakers
Unfortunately reserved for genuine holidaymakers in peak season, on the off-season this resort has been something the Umhlanga locals have kept a major secret.
Recently redone there is a designated pool and slide for the kids and well-positioned deck for on looking parents.
Waiters are at your beck and call with kiddies and cocktails menus. Plus there’s an eco friendly walk through the Eco Park for environmentalists. It’s the ‘go-to’ place on a sunny Sunday.
The Corner Café
You’ve heard of it, but if you aren’t on that side of Berea Rd you probably haven’t tried it, and best you do! It’s the Mecca of trendy small business owners. With wireless, an onsite Barbershop and Vintage clothing collection its ‘soooooooo’ the place to be. The menu boasts delectable daily specials and the waitrons are above average.
They are famous for their coffee. Pop past for a quick latte next time you’re in the area. The dress code is laidback and casual. Think laptop bags and converse sneakers. On a Saturday arvo from 1-3pm you can enjoy a local band with subdued jazz tunes that will make you proud to be a Durbanite.
