KZN facing drought crisis
Updated | By Staff Writer
South Africa has an uneven and variable climate which is compounded by climate change effects.
This year, whilst some parts of the country like Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga experienced heavy storms and floods, other provinces like KwaZulu-Natal, North West and Free State experienced creeping and worsening drought conditions.
KwaZulu-Natal is currently experiencing the worst drought in 30 years.
Ugu District Municipality and iLembe District Municipalities are the hardest hit.
The province almost in its entirety received below average rainfall as compared to previous seasons.
Most rivers are not flowing normally, some have dried up and some major dam levels are low.
For instance, at the beginning of March 2014 the Hazelmere dam was 98,5% full compared with 46.2% full in March 2015.
Despite being one of the 30 driest countries in the world our average daily water consumption is way above the international average compounded by water wastage.
We lose R7-billion annually due to water losses.
Some citizens are playing their part in conserving water- what are you waiting for?
