Durban has the best quality of life in SA
Updated | By tanstan fourie
Durbanites, it's time to boast.
Our beautiful city has outshined Cape Town and Jo'burg on a 'Quality of Living' survey.
Globally, Durban beat Cape Town (ranked 91st) and Joburg (which was placed 94th) and was ranked 85th out of 230 cities.
But why?
Well, Durbs has been praised for its "high-quality housing, plentiful recreational offerings and good consumer goods availability," according to Mecer.
Each city’s ranking is determined by the following factors:
1. Political and social environment
2. Economic environment
3. Socio-cultural environment
4. Medical and health considerations
5. School and education
6. Public services and transportation
7. Recreation
8. Consumer goods
9. Housing
10. Natural environment
Top five cities with the best quality of living:
Vienna tops the list as having the world’s best quality of living, and overall, European cities dominate while major cities in Australia and New Zealand feature in the top 10. North America only has one city cracking the top 10.
1. Vienna, Austria
2. Zurich, Switzerland
3. Auckland, New Zealand
4. Munich, Germany
5. Vancouver, Canada
And the five worst cities you could possibly live in?
1. N’Djamena, Chad
2. Khartoum, Sudan
3. Port-au-Prince, Haiti
4. Bangui, Central African Republic
5. Baghdad, Iraq
But let’s get back to Durban:
Durban ranked the highest (85th) for being a growing manufacturing and shipping centre.
However, the city’s problems with crime kept it from making it into the top 50.
What do you love about living in Durbs?
