Traffic muggings taking place through open car windows
Updated | By Diane Macpherson
Please be careful when traveling in your car, especially if you like to drive with your windows down. We've got two cases today, in different areas of Durban, where attempted muggings have taken place in traffic.

The latest was yesterday just after noon in the Essenwood Park area opposite Kilburn Road. A man armed with a knife tried to rob two women in a car through their open window. One of the women got a nasty cut on her arm. The woman started screaming, and another motorist, a man, tried to cut the suspect off with his car. The knife was knocked to the ground and the suspect was nabbed. Angry members of the public were apparently hitting the suspect before metro police arrived.
Then in Pinetown, Premilla and her husband were held up last Friday at around 5pm while in traffic on Crompton Street. They'd like to thank the man who came to their aid when two guys held Premilla's husband up at knifepoint through the open window. The one criminal had the knife at his throat while the other grabbed the car keys from the ignition after switching off the engine. The men demanded the couple's phones and Premilla's jewellery. And that's when their guardian angel appeared from one of the other cars in the traffic, and chased the robbers. Premilla writes: "We were not able to thank this young guy for his bravery, because traffic started to flow. For me being in that situation was traumatic but please air this story and thank this guy for me. We do not know this stranger, but he was our angel on that day. Please warn all motorists to be careful on Crompton Street in Pinetown."
Leon is hoping to get in touch with the woman whose car he bumped into on Tuesday morning at the corner of old North Coast Road and the road leading in to Glen Anil. He says there was chaos at the intersection that morning and a white Chevrolet Cruze hatch and his Audi knocked into one another. At the time he was not aware contact had been made and Leon drove off, realising at work what must have happened when he saw a slight graze on the left bumper of his vehicle. He would like to get in touch with the other driver so they can exchange details and follow the normal insurance procedures. Leon's contact number is 082 568 2085.
Finally, if you live in the Musgrave/ Morningside area, you're invited to a Community Policing Forum meeting this evening at 6 at DHS - on the corner of St Thomas and Essenwood. Crime in the area will be addressed, and a plan of action discussed. If you'd like more information please contact Fatima on 083 2725111. All sectors are welcome.
