Family recounts last moments with Sadia Sukhraj

Sadia was shot and killed during a hijacking outside her grandparents' home in Shallcross, near Chatsworth while on her way to school.  

Devika has recounted her last moments with Sadia, saying she was a bubbly, spiritual child who loved her family - especially her baby brother.

Police have arrested one man in connection with the hijacking. Another was killed, while a third hijacker is still on the run. 

Deputy Mayor, Fawzia Peer says it is important that communities work with the police to combat violent crime in Durban. She visited Sukhraj's grief-stricken family yesterday. 

"I went to the family and it was totally unbearable to look at the mother. She was in grief. She sat on the little girl's bed and she just screamed and cried. This is horrific and its unacceptable that this happens in society."

Peer was also expected to host a meeting to discuss the city's fight against crime in the afternoon.

"I have the technocrats coming over and we need to plan something as to what SAPS and Metro Police can do. We want everyone to be included, and the community at large. We all have a role to play in this," she said.   

While shock has gripped communities south of Durban, as they struggle to come to terms with Sadia's death, police have confirmed that stun grenades were used against unruly protesters who gathered outside Chatsworth police station last night.
