Pre-school to become compulsory in South Africa
South African children will be required to attend two years of Early Childhood Development before beginning Grade 1.
President Cyril Ramaphosa said during his State of the Nation Address in Parliament last night that the education of children before they enrol in formal schooling must be rolled forward.
Ramaphosa also stressed the need to improve reading comprehension among children in their first years of school.
Early Childhood Development centres will also be moved from The Department of Social Development to Basic Education.

"This is essential in equipping children to succeed in education, in work and in life. It is possibly the most important factor in overcoming poverty, unemployment and inequality."

The President said he wants to see all South African children receive at least two years of Early Childhood Development before they begin Grade 1.Early Childhood Development centres will also be moved from The Department of Social Development to Basic Education.
Schools will also become centres where pupils must be able to learn the necessary skills to work and function in an digital and technically oriented world.

Ramaphosa says new subjects will be offered to pupils so that pupils leave school with the ability to participate in modern industries and businesses.Digital workbooks and smart technology must also become a reality in the classroom.
