The effects of the rodents are being felt by many Australians. Farmers are spending thousands to try and eliminate the rodents from destroying their crops. While business owners are also being affected, with the mice chewing through electrical wires and damaging stock.
This massive infestation and the effects have prompted the government to authorise a double strength bait that can be used to rid of the rodents. "Just this month, the government also introduced a $50 million mouse plague package which includes free bait for farmers," usatoday.com reports.
A farmer in New South Wales spoke to the ABC News and said that the infestation was relentless. "The first time that I had to pick up a mouse out of the pool and smash it on the cement to kill it, I thought, 'Oh gosh, I can't do this,... "But then I was doing 50 a day."
