It literally looks like a crazy bug movie, the locusts everywhere, swarming the fields in several major towns in the Northern Cape.

As much as the officials have asked that residents remain calm, they also have realised that they have a real problem on their hands - how to deal with this invasion of flying insects.

"Mase Manopole is the Agricultural MEC for the Northern Cape. She is asking farmers to work with the department in order to identify where these outbreaks are happening. However, it also seems that personal responsibility is being encouraged." (The South African)

The MEC has suggested a way of chasing the locusts away, which can help residents deal with these swarms. One suggestion was to keep outdoor lights off when it gets dark, as they are attracted to the light.

Manopele said: “The current strong winds are supporting the flight and spread of the locusts, especially into our dwellings. However, we urge members of the public to chase the locusts away when they are spotted in their yards – and we also encourage everybody to switch off their outside lights at night.” (The South African)

Watch the video below to see how areas of the Northern Cape have been affected:

Some of the affected areas were listed as Upington, Kathu, Kimberley, De Aar, Prieska, Kuruman, Springbok, and parts of Pixley Ka Seme Municipality.
