Three questions to ask when shopping for clothes

Before taking home a new garment, make sure it's the right fit in all aspects.

How often do you pause before purchasing an item of clothing?

Practising the pause not only helps you save money, but it also helps you assess whether you really need another sweater for Winter.

Sometimes, we feed a part of ourselves that doesn't need feeding and we spend money on clothing that either doesn't suit us or isn't necessary. Instead of adding to your shopping basket, we think you should ask yourself some integral questions first.

These tips are not here to encourage you to stop shopping, but merely to be mindful when you are shopping.

Because if you are mindful and therefore present, it's more likely that you will be walking away with some great purchases. Believe it or not, living minimally is the way to go.

  • Focus on timeless pieces rather than trends

Trends come and go and you don't want to be stuck with a pricey item that you can only wear once or twice. Rather stick to items that fit your style and can be matched with several items.

  • Spend on quality

Although it might be exciting to get good bargains on many items, quantity doesn't always take precedence over quality. Getting quality goods is paramount if you want your clothing to last you. Good thread count and sustainable fabrics is important to note when shopping.

  • Retail therapy will cost you more than actual therapy

Shopping to overcome something you might be going through emotionally is not the way to go. You can make impulse buys when you shop emotionally. Instead, save your money and speak to a friend about what's troubling you, or better yet, see a professional.
