The things this physician swears he would never do when it comes to food
Updated | By East Coast Radio
Dr William Li shares these tips from his 20+ years of experience in the field...
With the varied opinions and advice that we receive from medical professionals, it can be tricky to navigate around all the do's and don'ts.
This physician shared some key insight into food, and with his twenty plus years of experience, we thought it valuable to share his five things with you.
1. He advises against eating anything with artificial sweeteners. This includes coffee, soda, etc.
His reasoning, "artificial sweeteners contain chemicals that actually impact negatively on our gut microbiome (which is our healthy gut bacteria)." (TikTok) Essentially, the artificial sweeteners kill off the healthy bacteria in our gut, which is what we don't want.
2. Do not eat movie theatre popcorn, specifically butter
He goes on to say that this is in fact not actually butter. It contains a mix of chemicals with a lot of synthetic preservatives, which are made to taste like butter.
3. He would never drink coffee that was offered to him on an airplane. Sounds weird, right? What could be the harm in that?
Well, he says that coffee made on an airplane is made from hot water from the tanks of an airplane. And, wait for it, most airplanes don't clean their tanks except maybe four times a year!
4. Never eat shrimp cocktail at a buffet or event where this is being served. We think this may be an obvious one, but let's hear his reasoning...
Since cleaning shrimp (or prawns) takes some time, it most likely means that it has gone through many people's hands. And according to research, 16% of cooked shrimp contains bacteria such as Vibrio, E.coli, which causes food poisoning...
That makes a lot of sense though, if you are not sure how your food is being handled, then you shouldn't eat it...

5. Don't consume maple syrup from diners or restaurants. Now this one doesn't necessarily apply to us, because we hardly get maple syrup at restaurants...
But the reason he shares is because the ones many diners serve isn't actually made out of maple. It is in fact filled with high fructose corn syrup, food colouring, artificial flavourings and sugar...
Rather steer clear or perhaps look at the ingredients to make sure before consuming.
