The holidays bring about a sense of wanting to be around family and friends. And for many people that means traveling and experiencing the feeling of being on holiday. Unfortunately, as we tip toe around our lockdown regulations and the spiralling infection rate, we are uncertain as to whether traveling will be on the cards for us.

But as a way of putting out good and positive vibes to the universe, we thought we should help by creating a one-stop destination for you when it comes to preparing for the holidays.

So just in case you were thinking of taking a road trip to Johannesburg, then this is what you need to know. For one, be prepared to spend on petrol, because the price of petrol is standing at "R20.29 per litre of Petrol 95, which is R5.83 (40%) higher than at the same time in 2020. This means fuel prices are now one of the main concerns when planning a road trip, as they can have a big impact on your holiday budget" (Topauto)

In other words, make sure you are prepared for the added costs for everything else, like tolls, snacks, and accommodation.

If you decide to take the N3 route to Johannesburg, which is just under 570km, then you will be set to "pay for eight e-tolls and 10 “normal” tolls on your way to and from Durban via the N3." (Topauto)

The current toll gate tariffs for the Johannesburg-Durban route as listed on the Sanral website are as follows:

  • De Hoek – R53.00
  • Wilge – R73.00
  • Tugela – R78.00
  • Mooi – R55.00
  • Marianhill – R13.00 (Topauto)

In total, if you are driving a VW 1.4 Polo Vivo Trendline, you will incur the below total cost for a return trip between Johannesburg and Durban. Courtesy of Topauto:

So the toll gates will amount to R544; E-Tolls R23.76 (unregistered e-toll user = R47.52); Petrol Unleaded 95 R1,319, which makes it a Total of R1,887 (Unregistered e-toll user = R1,911).

With that in mind, will you still be considering a road trip?
