This is insane, are we seriously ranked at number 35?!

There is a guy by the name of Shawn Anchor. He is an author and is well-known for his advocacy on positive psychology. He has been on Oprah's Super Soul Sundays as well as Ted Talks.

And one of the things he speaks about is how when we turn on our smartphones we are immediately bombarded with negative news stories. As much as we can speak about happiness for 25 minutes, the truth is that at some point our brains are trained into thinking that we are all doomed into suffering.

"The Mexican Council for Public Security and Criminal Justice has published its latest ranking of the 50 most violent cities in the world, with four South African cities included among them. The report lists the 50 most violent cities by the number of murders per 100,000 people, only considering cities with populations exceeding 300,000, where murder statistics are made available." Scary information indeed, not just because we live in one of them, but the fact that on a global scale South Africa is actually known for it's crime!

This is not ideal at all, but with the state of things in our country when it comes to jobs, the prices of everything, poverty, and 'laziness' mentality, it was bound to happen.

The thing is that the list makes it real, makes it official, and somehow creates a mental worry. Of course, we all don't want to be consumed by sad and negative news stories, but if we neglect to stay informed then we are not equipping ourselves with information that is much needed in staying safe.

While "Cape Town’s murder rate is heavily weighted towards gang-related violence. Durban, which ranked 31st last year, now ranks 35th – another improvement in the rankings, with its murder rate dropping to 39.98 per 100,000 people." (Business Tech)

No matter the ranking, we have to still stay vigilant and be prepared for anything. Other than that, like Shawn Anchor practices, stay positive...
