A student takes full advantage of the KFC fast food app glitch and orders free food... but was it really free?
A student finds a glitch in the KFC fast food app and takes full advantage of the technical error.
Xu, a 23-year-old student from China, found a technical glitch on the KFC app, he manipulated the voucher system and managed to secure KFC for a total of six months. He didn't just stop there though, he shared this information with four friends, together they ordered 'free/stolen' food to the value of £15,500.
£15,500 worth of food equates to roughly R300,000!
"Between April and October that year, he effectively managed to generate endless free food vouchers by switching between the KFC app and the company’s store on WeChat, China’s equivalent of WhatsApp." (Metro)
Xu turned this 'free' opportunity into a side hustle when he sold some of the free food to his classmates and enjoyed free buckets himself.
But it's like that saying goes, "ten days rogue must get caught one day". Xu and his friends' day came - they have been caught and charged accordingly.
Xu has been jailed for two and a half years and has been fined £700 for the scheme, which seems minute considering the loss faced by the fast-food franchise. His friends were also jailed for similar time frames.
