Dr Raj admits that the coffee companies don’t add any insect bits into the coffee on purpose, but the reality is that insects just happen to get into coffee bean bags.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, there have been studies which showed that up to 10% of green coffee beans can become infested with roaches and other insects. The issue comes in the grinding stage as coffee farmers and roasters aren’t able to process them out completely, so they just get roasted and ground up with the beans.
Health organisations around the world allow a certain amount of bug parts in our food as long as it doesn’t exceed a certain percentage. Dr Raj says that this isn’t something to freak out about – it’s safe to consume the insects. In fact, he jokes, saying that it’s just an extra protein boost.

Another added: “Okay dude some information you do not need to tell us, we are all coffee drinkers how dare you ruin our coffee in the morning’. A third said: ‘I really didn’t need this kid of negativity before going to sleep #fml”
