BEWARE: South African Lotto players are being scammed with this notification
Scammers will stop at nothing to get a quick buck...
The lottery in South Africa is quite popular. It's not just the elderly that make the time to take their lucky numbers weekly, but many people are overcome with a sense of luck and take their chance on a weekly basis.
Sometimes it works out in their favour, and then you get those that are totally against it and believe it's a whole hoax. Then there are those that take advantage of these believers, the scam artists.
There is currently a scam that is circulating amongst Lotto and Powerball players. Scammers are contacting regular players by sending them a notification SMS and/or email. They claim that the player has won a sum of money.
Not much has been said about what happens after the notification has been sent. For instance, whether they ask for banking details, etc. But a message from the iThuba National Lottery team has been revealed.
In a statement, they said:
"The only way to win the National Lottery is to buy and be in possession of a winning ticket. The National Lottery will never send you an email or SMS stating the value of your winnings, or your details to claim them. You can claim from any participating retailer, or the Ithuba offices: Beware of such messages, they could be a scam." (MSN)

Make sure to also beware today, as the Powerball jackpot is a hefty R87-million. Plus, it is April Fool's Day and criminals will use that as a way of exercising their trickery.
