An Australian café charges a staggering R2,200 for a cup of luxury coffee

Think you’ve been drinking luxury coffee at your
favourite café? Think again!
Coffee lovers will be disappointed to know that their favourite expensive coffee shop with the wide range of coffees isn’t as luxurious as they thought it was. An Australian café has taken the idea of luxury coffee to a whole new level by charging a whopping R2,200 for a cup of java.
While many are happy to fork out a premium price for a good cup of coffee, Gesha Cafe in Surrey Hills, Australia, is taking this to the extreme by charging the ridiculous amount for a cup of its Yuzo-style premium coffees.

While most of us would agree that the price is a complete rip-off, some customers who have tried a cup reveal the coffee is well worth the price. One customer, named Bernard, admits that he treats himself to one cup of the expensive hot drink per month. He adds that the flavour is “smooth, aromatic, and with fruit and butterscotch characteristics”.
In an interview with 7NEWS, cafe owner Ken Taing said: "[It's] the most unique and beautiful coffee in the world" and explains that each cup is so expensive because gesha, also known as geisha, coffee is difficult to grow and comes from remote locations. His particular batch is imported from the highlands of Panama.

It’s been reported that this particular coffee bean originated from the village of Gesha in Ethiopia before cultivation spread to Central America. While the bean is still cultivated in Ethiopia and Colombia, it’s said that Panama's beans are considered to be the best in the world.
Taing adds that growing conditions need to be very specific for the bean to flourish. He explains that the beans require the perfect altitude, volcanic soil, and microclimates like the one in Boquete, a small mountain town in Panama where it’s been said that the best gesha beans are grown.

Interestingly, at the 2019 Best of Panama specialty coffee auction, a geisha strain from the Lamastus family's Elida Estate in Panama sold for a record-breaking R15,344 per 450grams.
To give even more of a perspective, Sommelier Quinton Ferguson told 7NEWS that the coffee is about the experience as much as the taste, and is comparable to what cognac is to wine.
