For the most part, the response by Parisians to the attacks on their city have been remarkable.
Their President has declared that France is at war, which resulted in him escalating aerial attacks on Isis in Syria. Will this work, the jury is out!
The response by Parisians has been quite different. They have not declared war between themselves. I think this has something to do with what I regard as the spirit of Paris. If you have been to some of the great cities of the world you feel this spirit. It is not the brand position found in glossy advertising brochures.
It is something in the air. Think New York. Think Mumbai. Think Singapore. Think Berlin. Think Johannesburg.
This spirit is inextricably bound to a way of living. The people of Paris love to be on the streets- eating, drinking, talking about literature, art, theatre, music, sex, life and death. They know how to live, and how to embrace life.
This spirit is what will defeat Isis!
