WATCH: DUT lecturers express frustrations through dance
Updated | By Damon Beard
Over the past few weeks, the University's staff has been on strike over wage negotiations. But instead of taking to the streets, this group of lecturers found a more creative way to let off some steam.
Wage negotiations between the Durban University of Technology (DUT) and striking staff are still up in the air, with Unions wanting an increase in salaries and other benefits.
A few days ago, I had a chat with Alan Khan, Senior Director of Corporate Affairs at DUT. It seems as if the lecturers have resumed their duties this past week, even though the negotiations are still ongoing.

Well, between all the chaos, a group of lecturers decided to take a different approach to express their frustrations. In a video uploaded by lecturer David Colin Greenham on Facebook, you can see a group of lecturers sending a message of 'we’re standing up and want you to listen to what we’re saying'.
It's certainly not in the staff's best interests to collapse the institution – I mean if that happened, they’d be out of jobs. However, they do want to make their voices heard and chose dance to do so.
David was seen in the video doing the Capoeira - a type of martial art originating from Brazil. It combines a mix of music, dance, and acrobatics. Boy-oh-boy do the moves look like fun and quite a workout.

While I respect the decision of those who take to the streets to strike, I must commend this group for taking an approach to stand together and express their voices peacefully.
I got a chance to catch up with David about the video. Take a listen to what he had to say in the podcast below:
