Varsity student takes his mom to court over monthly expenses

A Johannesburg-based student has taken the law into his own hands by suing his mother for money he feels that is owed to him.

As I get older, I realise that the kids of today are entirely different from how we were growing up. They speak their minds and stake a claim to what they think 'rightfully' belongs to them.

Much like this particular story that I came across published originally by Daily Sun. It was reported that a Joburg varsity student has sued his mom for over R14,000 to cover his living expenses while he's hitting the books in varsity.

The mom spoke up against the incident, saying that she was traumatised by the lawsuit, and added that her son has not made an attempt to get funding, and stays with his dad.

Currently, she pays about R3,000 a month for his living costs, however, it was reported that the student wants the mom to pay for the following expenses:

  • Over R3,000 for his hotel
  • R3,000 for food and other personal items
  • R500 for pocket money - because how are you going to survive as a student, right?
  • R500 for relaxation - What?!
  • Over R600 for clothes
  • And over R2000 for the tuition

The son wants what's his because the mom allegedly did the same for his older brother when he was in his shoes.

There are many words that I can say about this story - most of them won't be that pretty. I think it's absurd that a child can behave like this and that it must be heartbreaking for this mother to go through an ordeal such as a this.

As I said, the kids of today...
