Should Matric results still be publicly published?
Updated | By Damon Beard
A person's Matric year is incredibly tough and stressful, meaning that results may not be exactly as you had planned. With that in mind, is it fair that the world gets to see how you did?
It's a yearly tradition and Matric students rush to get their results in the country's newspapers, but some people are questioning whether or not this should happen come January?

During the long-standing tradition, there have been countless reports of suicide as kids are devastated if their names do not appear in the paper. It's no wonder that Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga, recommended earlier this year that the tradition be done away with.
Amongst the hype of it all, there is the dismay of those who don't see their names and in more recent years, there have been reports of spikes in the rate of teen suicides around the time the results are released.

While some people are saying that those who have worked hard throughout the year and have passed deserve the thrill of seeing their names in the papers, others are saying that we should be thinking about the psychological impact it could have on a student if they don't see their name in the paper.
I personally think that the results should not be made publically available, instead, there should be a web portal where you key in your student number and yours is the only one you get to see.

I chatted with Clinical Psychologist Dr Melissa Boulind to get her views on the negative impact there could be on students 'failing' to see their name in the newspaper.
What do you think? Should Matric results be published in the newspaper or not, and what if it's just the student's exam number - will it make any difference?
