Police are investigating a case of Illegal car racing in Durban
Updated | By Damon Beard
After a horrific car collision in Durban over the weekend, Damon wants to know your thoughts on 'drag racing' and its impact on our roads.
This morning on Damon Beard's Big Debate: Should Drag Racing be made legal in Durban? Damon catches up with Parboo Sewpersadh, Senior Superintendent at Metro Cops, Durban.
According to IOL, police are investigating if a car accident on Saturday was the result of 'drag racing'. The accident resulted in the death of three people when two cars collided on Umgeni Road on Saturday night.

Over the years and after a series of similar incidents, it seems that there are four popular 'drag racing' spots in Durban;
- The Umgeni Road stretch .
- The backstretch in Springfield Park along Inanda Road.
- Chris Hani (North Coast) Road between the N2 and Rinaldo Road.
- Behind King Shaka International Airport.
Street racing is illegal and in my view an irresponsible act. It seems that even when law enforcement authorities clamp down, the illegal street racers return after a couple of months.
An alternative should be a place where street racers can pursue their passion in a structured and controlled environment - in order to not endanger themselves and others.
If a controlled environment was created for street racers, would it curb illegal racing and bring it to an end - or do you think people would still drag race illegally?
