PACT hopes to make a difference by sterilising homeless animals
Updated | By Damon Beard
One of the most crucial things needed right now to help PACT is dog and cat food. Without a moment's hesitation, Claudia and Belinda from the Kearsney Striders donated R10,000.
Phoenix Animal Care and Treatment (PACT) was established in March 2012 as a non-profit organisation dedicated to providing care and medical treatment for animals in the Phoenix area.
Many owners in the area either can't afford to or are not concerned with sterilising their animals. As a result, there is a considerable breeding problem in the area which leads to unwanted litters destined for homeless lives under unfathomable conditions. This is where PACT hopes to make a difference - sterilising homeless animals and helping owners who cannot afford sterilisation fees, with a welfare rate.
Their mission:
If an animal is found to be abused or neglected they will remove the animal from the home. Where homing or re-homing is required, they will enlist the assistance of their animal network consisting of a number of animal organisations in South Africa, and will relentlessly do their best to find a home.
What are their challenges?
Their immediate challenge is to raise enough money to clear their R220,000 debt to the vets in the North Durban area so they can again start to help the animals in the Phoenix, Inanda, and Kwa Mashu areas.

The next project is to try to raise the funds or to find a Fairy Godmother/Godfather who would either be prepared to donate a vehicle or be willing to raise an HP for them to buy a reliable vehicle for the transport of the rescued animals between rescue to vet to kennels or foster homes.
Then, ultimately, PACT is aiming to secure land on which they can build kennels for their rescued animals who are awaiting fostering or adoption. This could also become an actual business venture for anyone who would like to partner with them as many people are needing kenneling for their own animals when they go away.
PACT strives to:
- Raise funds to sterilise homeless animals in Phoenix
- Educate the community on responsible animal care
- Find forever homes / foster homes for stray babies
- Feed homeless animals
- Provide medical treatment to strays where necessary
As soon as the Kearsney Striders heard about PACT, they wanted to help and get the ball rolling.
The Kearsney Striders are not just a running club, but a team of people with the biggest hearts in the world.
Claudia heard about PACT's plight and immediately asked how they could get involved.
One of the most crucial things needed right now is food - dog food and cat food, and without a moment's hesitation, Claudia and Belinda from the Kearsney Striders donated R10,000 towards just that.
