Man with dementia dumped by own family

Authorities spent months trying to figure out who this man was.

How can you even begin to comprehend an elderly man's wife and son taking him to a foreign country and then abandoning him in a car park before flying home to the USA?

Roger, who has dementia, was abandoned at a bus station two years ago with no form of identification. The 76-year-old didn't know his name or where he was, and it was only when two men saw him that he was taken into the care of a nursing home while police and social services tried to find out who he was.

His identity was finally discovered when somebody recognised an old photo of him. The man's son said he had nothing to do with the abandonment of his father, but what confuses me is that if his father was missing, how does that same son not go and look for him?

Roger's story will now be told on a weekly investigative current affairs program. Elderly people are sometimes abandoned at hospitals in what is known as ‘granny-dumping’, due to the high cost of health care in America.
