How will we survive when the robots take over?
Updated | By Damon Beard
If we are moving towards an automated future where robots do everything for us, what happens to the jobs that are lost? Would the government need to subsidise our living expenses if that happens?
Doesn't it always feel like you've just been paid and then the wait for the next payday takes forever?!
Apparently, according to some experts, the way we work for money is becoming more and more outdated.
These experts also believe that as robots take over our jobs, we are going to be in a position where people are going to struggle to get work - even more so than right now!
In lieu of this, these experts think we should be getting what is called a ‘Universal Basic Income’, which in a nutshell really just means we should get a big paycheck straight from the government.
Before you click off and comment that this is ‘never gonna happen’, a referendum was held in Switzerland with this very question in mind. While it didn’t pass, it’s clear the conversation is being had and there are schemes being run in the Netherlands, and there have been previous trials in Canada ... so this could happen!
Interestingly, the trials and the model both detected no dip in how hard people work, because believe it or not, the reason that people go to work isn’t solely tied to money, despite what people say.
