How do you tell your partner they're gaining weight?

When it comes to being open and honest with your partner, discussing weight issues has to be one of the most difficult topics ever, right?!
Simon and I were chatting on Monday about those awkward conversations you sometimes have in relationships. You know, the ones that you know are probably not going to end well?

He spoke about how since he has been dating, he has put on a little weight and how his girlfriend constantly reminds him of this. The thing is that she has put on a little weight as well, and Simon, very bravely so, thinks she needs to shed some kgs. Simon has to be one of the most straightforward guys ever. He just says it like it is.

If you look at your partner and think that they are looking a little 'well fed', how do you (if at all) let them know? For me, my girlfriend has always been the fit and well-toned one, so for us, it's always me that is chasing that better look. Now she is pregnant and that brings with it all sorts of potential pitfalls on its own…
So the big question is: How do you tell your partner that they have put on weight?
