Engagement rings: Does the size and price matter?

Should the size of the ring and the price be in line with the guy's salary or is it the thought that counts? I knew someone who got engaged and her mom had such an issue with the size of the ring.
There was drama for days! In fact, the mom created such an issue that the engagement was even called off for a while. I mean, can you ever, right? The mom’s words were: "If he can't afford better he doesn't deserve you." Really?
Does the size and cost of the ring really equate to the amount of love someone has for you?

Here's my opinion for anyone out there looking to pop the big question: buy a ring you think your partner will like and you can afford.
If they don’t like it or want something bigger and more expensive, tell them to go and gold-dig somewhere else.
Women, what do you think? Does the price tag and size of the engagement ring really matter? I'd love to know what you think!
