Damon catches up with South African professional surfer Jordy Smith

Local surfing hero Jordy Smith is competing at this year’s Ballito Pro and is hoping to kick-start his World Surf League Title bid after finishing 2nd last year.
I’ve been following Jordy’s career since he burst onto the surfing scene when he was still a grom, winning a junior title before hitting it big on the main stage with the big boys.

He grew up in Durban and even went to Glenwood High School, so as East Coasters, we should get behind the lad and show some support.
Jordy is the top seed at this year’s Ballito Pro down at Willard Beach. I had a chance to go down myself and the surfing conditions aren’t all that great. But being a true professional, Jordy has managed to get himself into the final 24 of the competition.

I caught up with him after his early morning heat to chat about being back home, as well as his title hopes.
