WhatsApp groups: The good, the bad, and the ugly
Updated | By Jane Linley-Thomas
WhatsApp groups are a great way to communicate quickly, but sometimes Jane finds them a nuisance and just wants to wish them away!
Listen as KZN and Jane share their views on the topic in the podcast, then read more below:
WhatsApp groups - where should I begin? After a bit of drama in one of my friends groups, it got me thinking and I decided to unleash the WhatsApp group drama I go through internally almost every day.
Is it just me or do you also belong to a WhatsApp group or two that has you internally threatening to leave the group?
As a mom of three small kids, I have three different school WhatsApp groups. This can be a bit hectic at times when these groups are used for commentary. I get it - some folk love to share jokes and pictures in the group, but it's just not for me. I think I'm 'The Grinch' of WhatsApp groups.
Some days I wish that, like Facebook, WhatsApp would give you the chance to exit the group quietly without that loud sound of, 'hey everyone Jane has just left the group' notification.
I love it when a group forms and out the blocks it's written that you have the freedom to exit when you choose to, without being held to ransom and subjected to 100 messages about who's bringing what to the bring and share.
The family WhatsApp group is another dangerous and volatile group. I have seen many a dramatic exit and reintegration on that one. Just the other day, my friend's husband exited his family group. The shock and horror was pretty intense.
Speaking about intense, I was recently in a group regarding a baby shower and what turned out to be a channel for plan-making and decor ideas turned into a bun fight as the ladies fought to-and-fro about every minor detail. Yup, you guessed it - I bit the bullet and exited the group with a resounding 'Jane is out of here' exit.

It seems that guys groups are different. They are on the down low banter-wise and more visual like pictures of golf clubs, a pint of beer or a PG-type of meme. In all honesty, I think I'd prefer to be in the boys group, ha! I could so do a picture of a pair of sneakers, a cup of coffee, and a rad shot of the beach as opposed to an onslaught of notifications going on in my bag.
Do you find yourself in unnecessary WhatsApp groups? What groups are they and what goes on in them?
