The wedding dance is one of the most special moments of every reception, and one Durban couple found a unique way to spice things up.
Wentworth resident Mallory van Niekerk and her husband Aldane Marais, who is from Pietermaritzburg, say they wanted to do something a little different to the norm on their big day.
The couple, along with their bridesmaids and groomsmen, decided to face-off on the dancefloor during their reception at ‘The Venue Fontana’ earlier this month.
What was meant to be just a fun dance routine turned into a dance battle that had guests cheering in excitement.
Mallory says she got the idea for the dance-off from her sister-in-law Debra, who showed her a video she had seen on YouTube.
“I’ve always loved dance and I didn’t want my wedding to be boring. I asked [Aldane] if we could do something exciting so it’s not just the usual program that’s done at a wedding. We both wanted it to be youthful and exciting,” she told us.

Mallory says the best part of the dance-off was when her husband, who was adamant that he would keep it simple, showed off some serious moves.
“The ending was the best part. During the wedding planning and preparations, Aldane was very clear that he was not going to get down and dirty in his suit. So, in the end when he got down and did the windmill and was breakdancing we were all so surprised. We all went ballistic when he did it. That was my most favourite part.”
So, who won the dance-off? Mallory thinks her new hubby and his groomsmen totally owned the dancefloor.
“When I suggested the idea to Aldane it was supposed to be more on the fun side and not taking it so seriously, but the guys really put a lot more thought into their dance routine. The girls were very simple. We went so basic because we knew we were going to be in our big dresses.”
Mallory and Aldane’s wedding was anything but normal, and guests described it as the “best wedding ever”.
Since it was uploaded to Facebook, the video has been viewed over 75,000 already.
