#TrendReport: Pop culture with a fantasy twist

If you’ve spent any time at all on the internet lately, you’ll have noticed a certain fantasy creature being used as the inspiration for everything from food to beauty to fashion. The not-so-humble unicorn is back.
It started with Starbucks’s Unicorn Latte a few weeks ago - the colourful, flavour-changing drink got loads of coverage online with people lining up to try it. And it hasn’t stopped there. From unicorn make-up tutorials on YouTube to unicorn home decor and unicorn hair colour, it seems that this wave is unstoppable.

But what’s behind this trend? Usually when people all fixate on one cultural trend there is something deeper at play?
As Chris Reid, trend researcher at the International Trend Institute, explained in his chat with Jane, he thinks it’s to do with our outlook on the future more than our preference for all things bright and sparkly.
