Jane shares an open letter to her son, Cooper
Updated | By Jane Linley-Thomas
Jane is one beaming mom this Wednesday as her son enters Grade 1. Here’s what she had to say to him on his big day.
Dearest Cooper,
Gosh, boy, how time has flown, it feels like just yesterday I was waddling around with a swollen belly of love, a sore lower back, heartburn, and sausage fingers waiting for your arrival.
I can still clearly remember the first moment I met you, I had never felt love like that. On that day, dad and I made you a promise that we would love, support, and protect you with all our hearts always.
In the last six years we have experienced so much and thanks for holding my hand as I had a go at this first-time mom thing, we have learnt together along the way haven't we. I can't believe today is your first day in Grade 1. I thought I would be a sobbing mess but seeing you so excited and happy made me feel such resounding joy. I cannot wait for you to experience all this world has to offer and know your bright little mind will hang on every word.
I know we chatted on the way to school but I just wanted to note a few things.
Firstly, be kind to those around you, as well as to yourself. Showing yourself and others around you respect, love, and kindness is the way to go.
Always look at people in the eyes when you talk, and a nice firm hand shake goes a long way.
Manners maketh the man, this is non-negotiable. Yes, please, no thank you.
It's ok to be different, it's sometimes hard to stand out but be brave, even if you are not, pretend to be, no one can tell the difference.
Speaking about being brave, stand up for yourself without being unkind and keep an eye out for anyone who looks like they could do with a friend.
Look out for the bully, this is a child that will seem the meanest but actually needs the love the most.
Mistakes are going to happen, it's ok. It's in these moments that we learn the most.
Share with us. Dad and I love nothing more than hearing how your day was and what made your heart happy, and also what made you feel sad.
Ask questions.
Work hard, as you know as long as you try your best that's all we can ask for.
You aren't always going to win and that's fine, everyone deserves their time in the sun.
Be a good winner, and loser.
Make good choices.
Choose to be happy, there is always something to be grateful for. Be the most positive and enthusiastic person you know.
Shine bright, little boy, we are so proud of all that you are and all that you are going to become.
Thank you for choosing me as your mom, being a mom to you and your brother and sister is the greatest gift I have ever been given. My life's greatest work.
All my love always,
Mom x
