Improving the lives of breast cancer survivors
Updated | By Jane Linley-Thomas
After hearing the story of Dr Liana Roodt, who offers free surgery for breast cancer patients, The M Store, creators of mastectomy bras and prosthesis, want to aid those in need on their journey to recovery.
Jane chats to Conrad Barnard, founder of The M Store about what they do and how they want to help breast cancer survivors on the road to recovery;
Cancer kills more people every year than AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria combined. According to Globocan 2012, the most commonly diagnosed cancers worldwide were lung (1.8 million, 13.0% of the total), breast (1.7 million, 11.9%), and colorectum (1.4 million, 9.7%).

The risk of breast cancer in South Africa is 1 in 26 (National Cancer Registry 2012). Breast cancer is not age specific, with many women under the age of 40 regularly diagnosed, and the reality is that all women are at risk, whether you have a family history or not.
The key is to regularly conduct self-examinations so that you are aware if something does not seem right. Early diagnosis can make a huge difference.
Conrad Barnard, who is a certified Orthotist and Prosthetist - and The M Store Founder, heard the story of Dr Liana Roodt, who wants to reduce the waiting period for breast cancer patients by offering them operations free of charge, and decided that he too wants to help make a difference in the lives of breast cancer survivors.

The M Store provides post-mastectomy bras and prosthesis. They provide mastectomy bras for everyday use, as well as active wear and swimming products.
Conrad has very generously committed to giving five women breast prostheses and mastectomy bras, as well as a consultation at any one of The M Store practices.
