Huh? Adult thumb sucking is apparently a thing

You thought only babies do it - but apparently there are some adults who love to have a good suck on their thumb.

A bizarre new statistic has surfaced - and we're not entirely quite sure how to feel about it.

According to MadeForMums, it is reported that 12% of adults still suck their thumbs. Although it's a British statistic, we can't help but still feel some type of way towards it.

The survey was originally conducted by Babychild.org.uk in which respondents were asked to fess up to their childhood habits.

Thumbsucking is usually common amongst infants who do it to soothe themselves and is considered to be therapeutic. For some, it is just a childhood habit, but for others, it's a habit that takes years to grow out of.

The practice of thumbsucking has been criticised by medical professionals who argue that while it's considered a pacifier, it has been known to cause dental problems such as the oral cavity being affected, and even a chance of a crossbite.

Some of the other habits that adults confessed to doing included the following:

  • Sleeping with a childhood toy
  • Sleeping with a light on
  • Sucking a thumb/ finger
  • Owning a comforter/ blanket
  • Stroking skin/ soft items
