How do you maintain a happy marriage?

The initial moment when you fall in love is amazing, then comes the wedding, but thereafter the hard work begins - maintaining the happiness and joy you felt from the beginning.

The walking down the aisle part is easy, but keeping the momentum going is no easy feat! Looking back at Peter Asher, 91, and his wife Josephine, 101, who recently celebrated 68 years of everlasting love with a vow renewal, one wonders what their secret is?

A recent article by Parent 24 details the findings of a study, citing a few ways to maintain a happy marriage.

  1. The way to a woman’s heart is through the dishes, that's a firm yes from me!
  2. Turns out, NOT sharing similar personality traits is better for marital longevity.
  3. Save together to stay together -  savers and spenders eventually end up clashing over money.

Sounds easy enough, right?!

But if that doesn't help, here are a few of my tips:

  1. Being independent is key, although it's fun to do things together, having your own personal hobbies aids in helping to maintain your own personality (the personality your partner fell in love with after all). Also, absence does make the heart grow fonder!
  2. Date night - it's easy to slip into that daily routine, we're all guilty of it. Planning that romantic monthly date will take you back to the time where the effort was put in.
  3. Compliments - yes we know you love each other, be every now and then you want to know how good you look in that suit or that what you do for the relationship is appreciated. Let your partner know that you do take notice.
  4. Take responsibility - you don't have to wait for one person to get the task done. Need something fixed? You can also make the effort to call someone to get the task done.
  5. Listen - listen to the physical and emotional signs. Sometimes we want to leap forward and just dish out advice, no, take a moment to listen, most times people just need a listening ear.
