Hooray! Car guards to the rescue on a rainy day in Johannesburg

Four car guards came together and helped save the day, and it was this selfless act that prompted a Johannesburg resident to share it on social media.

Many countries cannot quite understand why South Africans need car guards, but the reality is that crime and car theft is a massive issue in our country.

Many people have different views on car guards and whether they should even be tipped. Our very own Bongani Mtolo from East Coast Drive even shared about the verbal contract that's drawn up when you greet a car guard.

Being a car guard is an honest job, and while many have mixed feelings, some take it very seriously. Priscilla Michelle was out and about on a rainy day at a Lonehill shopping mall when she noticed four car guards coming together to save a shopper's car from being drenched.

It seemed as if the shopper mistakenly left their windows open. Using pieces of cardboard, they strategically placed them over the windows to protect the car.

Priscilla shared two pictures on her Facebook page of the car guards' efforts, captioned: "To the person who left their windows open at lonehill shopping center, i just wanted to share with you how these guys tried to prevent your car getting wet. People always moan about these guys and say "they only around when you leave" i say what type of service do you expect for R2 Susan? A red carpet? Be realistic peeps. They dont take your kids college fund. Spare some change even a R20 once in a while (one less redbull) which is bad for you anyway. See now theyre saving your life too..."

We caught up with Priscilla to find out more.

"I watched as they (the car guards) fiddled with some cardboard and that's when I realised the customer had left their windows open. These guys were trying to balance the cardboard to protect the inside from getting drenched from the rain," she said.

She went on to express what she thought about what these car guards did in the pouring rain.

"I thought it was incredibly kind that they all came to help so I took out my phone and snapped a pic of them trying to secure the cardboard (it kept falling down). Eventually, they managed to secure it and walked away looking all chuffed. I snapped another pic of there handy work and decided it was so sweet that I had to share it on social media," she said.

Priscilla went on to explain her aim of sharing the image;

"I shared the story in hopes that a few people would see it and maybe tip the car guards a little more especially in bad weather. I know people see car guards negatively and have personally heard people complain that they suddenly arrive when you're pulling out. Whilst I understand that may be true, I don't understand the expectation from the car guards? They are running up and down to help everyone, generally, I'm greeted hello and goodbye. What more do you want from them?" she said.

She concluded by saying that the owner of the car eventually saw the post and was blown away.

"The owner (of the car) saw my post and was super grateful to these guys who had sheltered her car. I didn't ask why her windows were open (lol) but I guess that's not important. What's important is that we share (this post) and see the best in SA because there is so much good - just look," she concluded.
