East Coast Radio gives Durban man 'Hero of KZN for 2017' award
Sibusiso Mbele joined Jane in studio to share his inspiring story of the many lives that he saved during the devastating #DurbanStorm which happened on the 10th October.
On Tuesday 10th October Durban was hit by a devastating storm. lives were lost, buildings were destroyed and people left homeless. I was on-air during the storm and had just taken over from Damon Beard when things quickly turned upside down. The rain pelted down in all parts of the province and I kept thinking about my own family and friends and hoped they were safe.
But out of the darkness, there is always light. We heard of a man who dragged a woman out of her car to safety, and then we saw the image of him in the act of saving her. We just had to get him in the studio and award him the 'KZN Hero of 2017' award.
It's not often you get to meet a person like Sibusiso. From the moment I met him, I felt so emotionally drawn to him. The thought of this selfless human risking his own safety for that of others moved me somewhere deep inside. Adding to that, he is the most humble and unassuming person I have met in a long time.
The world is hungry for stories and people like this and as a country, we are so in need of stories that unify us as opposed to highlighting how different we are.
Meeting this man humbled me and I am so grateful to have shared a room with him. He makes me want to be a better person. Thank you for being you, Sibusiso Matrick Mbele. My KZN Hero!
