The first day of school is supposed to signify a new beginning, but for many, this is not the case, especially when it comes to boarding school.

A friend of mine phoned me in quite a state last night. Her son, who is in Grade 9, started boarding school last week and is hating it and wants to leave.

As his mother, she feels desperate that he is so unhappy, but in the same breathe feels he is in the best place. She is stuck between a rock and a hard place.
I was so homesick my first year at boarding school and begged my mom and dad to come home. However, I am eternally grateful they made me stick it out because once the homesickness subsided, I was so happy. High school was one of the happiest times of my life.

Granted, it's not for everyone and going into Grade 9 also poses the challenge of already-forged friendships.
My friend is not wavering and has told him he has to do the year before they consider moving him. Despite her firm stance, she is battling with knowing he is so bitterly unhappy.
