Times Live spoke to Asanda Ngcobo in an exclusive interview about her feelings surrounding the video exposing the alleged verbal abuse of her now late mother whilst in hospital.

After watching this video which I saw on News24, I thought to myself, when you entrust someone to care for your family - be it a nurse, a teacher at a creche or a carer at an old age home, they are meant to be the people who look after our people with care, love if possible, and ALWAYS with dignity.

Looking at the video, regardless of what's being said, I do get that the nurse is referring to the patient being relatively mobile, meaning she could have used the provided bedpan instead of soiling herself - but that is not the point. The way this nurse handled the situation is disgusting. The uproar could have been avoided if the nurse had just closed the curtain and changed the lady privately, instead of exposing her body to the other patients.

Had this been my mother in a similar position, lying on her back and with what looks like a nappy being put on her in full view of the entire ward, I would have lost it too.

The MEC for Health has since gotten involved in the matter.

I remember one of the scariest exposés I ever saw was the abuse that was going on at an old age home, it made my stomach turn to ice!
