Updated | By Stacey & JSbu
Growing up in Soweto and Alex, Kitty dreamt of being a dancer, even though family and neighbours didn't always understand her dance choices.

It's the last day of August and the last of our #WomenUnlocked feature.
Today Stacey and JSbu chat to the phenomenal dancer, Kitty Phetla.

Kitty Phetla is a senior soloist with Joburg Ballet. She is still amazed at how it all happened for her and how she came so far and actually making her dreams come true, not only on a local platform but also internationally.
She was born to a family in Soweto in 1983. A self-proclaimed tomboy, when offered the choice of karate or ballet as an extramural activity at school, she opted for the latter to challenge herself. Tall and firm in build, Kitty did not match the typical profile of a dancer but her dedication allowed Kitty to tour Russia as the first black dancer to embody the famous Dying Swan on stage, opening a proud new chapter for African artists. By special request, she was given the honour of showing her swan to Nelson Mandela.
