What do you do when someone apologizes for something they've done repeatedly?
Updated | By Stacey & JSbu
Remember the One Republic song, ‘It's Too Late To Apologize’ or perhaps the Elton John
classic, ‘Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word’? Well, these tunes have
inspired a conversation between Stacey & JSbu. This led to a conversation
about forgiveness and letting go.
On Tuesday afternoon, Stacey & JSbu asked KZN: ‘What do you do when someone apologises for something they've said that hurts your feelings, but do the same thing again and again and again?' - and the flood gates of emotions opened.
According to author Aaron Lazare, who wrote a book titled, 'On Apology':
Timing is an important and complex ingredient in delivering effective apologies- Aaron Lazare
What happens though when you are dealing with someone who refuses to acknowledge that they have hurt you and that they need to apologise? The burden of carrying the load of waiting for someone to apologise to you can be draining, especially if you are owed an apology by someone very near and dear to you.
Let’s be honest, though, there are people who find it genuinely difficult to express sincere sorrow. Elton John was right when he sang that ‘Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word’. Could there be a foolproof way of helping those who find it challenging to do so?
A few things come to mind:
- Apologise as soon as you can
- Take full ownership, which means no ifs and buts
Can you help Stacey & JSbu complete the list?
