Braais are a cherished South African tradition, celebrated with sizzling meats, good company, and a laid-back atmosphere.
In KwaZulu-Natal, braai culture holds a special place in our hearts. However, there's one unwritten rule that locals tend to follow religiously: certain culinary traditions just aren't the same unless family is around.
Needless to say, every family has their own way of doing things.
One such tradition is preparing a hearty pot of "umngqusho" (samp and beans), a staple side dish. When family is present, the preparation of umngqusho is a communal event, with everyone contributing to the pot.
Here are some of the responses from fellow Durbanites:
- "We make crayfish curry when my family is around"
- "Garlic bread is made from scratch with my family"
- "We don't braai unless my family is there"
- "Potato salad, coleslaw and more"
- "Expect the bare minimum unless the family is in town"

A braai isn't just about food; it's unity, sharing stories, and strengthening family bonds.
