The traffic department at uMhlathuze is searching for a driver who was captured on video at Naval Island Beach in Richards Bay, driving through throngs of beach goers recklessly.
Numerous videos have been circulating online of the incident which is alleged to have taken place on New Year's Day.
In one of the first videos to go viral on social media and WhatsApp, the Range Rover is seen driving through scores of beach goers with two people waving their hands from the sun roof of the vehicle.
The crowds in the video can be heard cheering and clapping.

However, things took a turn as is seen in follow up videos of the Range Rover now semi-submerged in the water. The car is clearly stuck in the water.

A Facebook user, Thokozani Mkhize, sounded off on the viral videos with this:
Let's fix this. This is not sad at all it lesson to be learned. Dnt drink and drive. This car cost a fortune to swim with plus insurance wont pay. Let's hope he has enough money to fix the damage- Thokozani Mkhize
Spokesperson of uMhlathuze municipality, Mdu Ncalane, was quoted as saying the following:
He posed danger to people who were at the river. The police are looking for him and will make an example out of him to show that breaking the law was unacceptable,” said Ncalane. He added the police were patrolling the entry point at Naval Island and that it was not easy to control cars once they were inside- Mdu Ncalane
He concluded by saying that identifying the driver at fault will be easy because his car registration is clearly visible in the videos that have been shared online.
