Last week, shoppers in Secunda Mall, Mpumalanga had their mall trip interrupted when a robbery took place at one of the jewellery shops.
Since then, footage of the incident has made its way around on social media. The footage includes CCTV video from inside the store as well as videos of two of the alleged robbers who were shot while they were trying to get away.
Two members of staff and a customer were going about their usual business in the Diamonds & Pearls store when two men entered the store.
They are followed by two more men and the suspects move behind the counter before emptying the jewellery trays into a bag.
The robbers seemed to have been unaware of the fact that there was one more employee in an office which was adjacent to the counter they were busy cleaning out.
The employee emerged holding a gun and opened fire on the suspects, who were also armed.
They started fleeing and ran into the halls of the mall where two managed to make it out but two others did not escape. One was wounded and collapsed on the floor near the escalators, while another was also shot but did not make it and died at the scene.
This video contains a compilation of all the footage that has surfaced, including some very graphic content:
The police are still looking for the other robbers, but the Secunda Mall has released a statement:
We are grateful that no tenants, staff or customers were injured during this event. Unfortunately we cannot give any further comments at this stage due to the ongoing police investigation and await the release from the provincial Brigadier of police.- Secunda Mall management
The suspects who did manage to escape may have used a white VW Polo Sedan with a partial license plate of CC00CFGP.
Since the investigation is still ongoing, the police want to encourage anyone with any information that might be linked to the case to call 017 624 2000.
