WATCH: AI-generated lawyer lands man in hot water

A man's AI lawyer experiment went concerningly wrong in court after upsetting a judge.

A man's attempt to use an AI-generated lawyer in a New York courtroom has sparked controversy and left a judge unimpressed.
Jerome Dewald, who was representing himself in an employment dispute, created a video that featured a well-dressed, smiling man who argued his case before a panel of judges.
However, things took a turn when Justice Sallie Manzanet-Daniels interrupted the video, demanding to know if the person on screen was real.
Dewald sheepishly admitted that he had generated the video using AI software.
According to the NY Times, the judge was not pleased, pointing out that Dewald had failed to disclose this information when he applied to play the video during the hearing.
“It would have been nice to know that when you made your application. You did not tell me that, sir,” Manzanet-Daniels said.
She asked for the video to be turned off before stating, “I don’t appreciate being misled”.
Manzanet-Daniels challenged Dewald to present his case himself, saying, "If you want to have oral argument time, you may stand up and give it to me."
Reports have revealed that Dewald had used AI software created by a San Francisco tech company to create the video, hoping it would help him present a clearer argument due to his struggles with public speaking.
After the incident, he wrote a letter apologising to the court, acknowledging that they were "really upset" about it.
Many social media users believe that the judge's reaction was understandable, given the lack of disclosure about the AI-generated video.
It's essential to consider the potential consequences of using AI in such situations and it's crucial to be open and honest about its use.
While AI can be a powerful tool, it's clear that it's not yet ready to replace human lawyers in court.
